Passage 1(极限运动、蹦极 bungee jumping)
More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains, some traveled into unknown parts of the world, some sit in small boats across the largest sea.Now some people begin to look for a new excitement.
Bungee jumping (蹦极) and motorcycle (摩托车)race are quite dangerous sports.Bungee jumping only lasts a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band(带)tied to your legs. You fall down and the rubber band pulls you up.About 2 000 000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.
Why people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight and was interesting.
Nowadays many people think that there is little excitement in life. They live and work in safe places, buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.
Why these people like dangerous sports? The answer is:they want to look for danger and excitement.
Passage 2(女飞?#24615;?Amelia Earhart)
耶鲁专升本集训营高端习题册 阅读理解passage 11
The year was 1932. Amelia Earhart was flying alone from North America to England in a small single-engined aeroplane. At midnight, several hours after she had left Newfoundland, she ran into bad weather. To make things worse, her altimeter (高度表) failed and she didn’t know how high she was flying. At night, and in a storm, a pilot is in great difficulty without an altimeter. At times, her plane nearly plunged (冲) into the sea.
Just before dawn, there was further trouble. Amelia noticed flames (火焰) coming from the engine. Would she be able to reach land? There was nothing to do except keep going and hope.
In the end, Amelia Earhart did reach Ireland, and for the courage she had shown, she was warmly welcomed in England and Europe. When she returned to the United States, she was honored by President Hoover at a special dinner in the White House. From that time on, Amelia Earhart was famous.
What was so important about her flight? Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean alone, and she had set a record of fourteen hours and fifty-six minutes.
In the years that followed, Amelia Earhart made several flights across the United States, and on each occasion she set a new record for flying time. Amelia Earhart made these flights to show that women had a place in aviation (航空) and that air travel was useful.

耶鲁专升本培优特训营周测卷第7套 passage 2
The Winter Olympics are also called the White Olympics. At this time, many colourful stamps are published(发行)to mark(标志)the great Games. The first stamps marking the opening came out on January 25,1932 in the United States for the 3rd White Olympics. From then on ,publishing stamps during the White Olympics became a rule.
During the 4th White Olympics, a set of stamps were published in Germany in November 1936.The five Olympics rings were drawn on the front of the sport wear.It was the first time that the rings appeared on stamps celebrating the White Olympics.
In the 1950's,the stamps became more colourful. When the White Olympics arrived, the host countries(东道国)as well as the non-host countries published stamps to mark the Games.China also published four stamps in February 1980,when Chinese sportsmen began to take part in the White Olympics.
Japan is the only Asian country that has ever held the White Olympics.Altogether 14,500 million stamps were sold to raise(筹集)money for this sports meet.
Different kinds of sports were drawn on these small stamps.People can enjoy the beauty of the wonderful movements of some sportsmen.
passage 4 (真实与谎言 use truth to cheat)
Be aware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!” This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, or maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was winner. He’s really a big loser! He didn’t say anything that was false, but he omitted important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an advertisement, saying “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might boast, “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples(粉刺).” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well

I should tell you that you will find it hard to make friend with that young man.

When it comes to part-time jobs, people’s views vary from person to person. Some people believe that taking part-time jobs is good, while others do not agree with them. In their eyes,is bad/ better.
As is often pointed out, taking part-time jobs has a great number of advantages. To begin with, there is no doubt that it can help us to make money, which will ease the burden of our families. In addition, we can accumulate some experience in this process, getting prepared for the future work.
However, there is also a different voice. On the one hand, nobody can deny thatdoing part-time jobs will take a lot of time . On the other hand, students’ study may be influences to some extent. That is why quite a few people do not encourage students to take part-time jobs.
From the above analysis, who is right? I consider that both of the opinions have something reasonable and right. Given the chance, I would prefer the former/ latter view.
